Dear Fellow Horsemen and Women

Dear Fellow Horsemen and Women:

My name is Sue Karges, and I am the Executive Director of Handi-Riders of Sioux Falls, SD. We are a small non-profit Therapeutic Riding and Hippotherapy group. My title sounds official but we only have 3 paid staff and operate mostly with volunteers. We are currently serving about 30 riders and have a waiting list. Our budget is based on donations, small client fees and fund raisers. Frankly, we do not have much money to operate on.

Our greatest need right now is a few younger horses, tried and true, yet sound and healthy. Our current population has served us so well, but average at least 20 years old…

In these times of rising fuel costs and record low horse prices, I was wondering if our ability to accept donated horses - and offer the resulting tax relief – might be an option for some ApHC members. Sometimes people outgrow horses, lose interest, or horses develop small issues that prevent them from performing at their most competitive level. In each of these circumstances, owners may not be able to recoup their investment by selling their horse at current market rates. We can offer the option of donating them, and declaring their charitable donation on their taxes.

We very much appreciate any help you can offer. On behalf of our clients, I thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

J. Sue Karges
