Appaloosa Horse Club receives funding for Equitana

January 19, 2005
Moscow, Idaho – The Appaloosa Horse Club, Inc. (ApHC) is brushing up on its German as it prepares for Equitana, an international equine expo held in Essen, Germany from February 26 – March 6, 2005. Participation in this prestigious event was made possible by funding provided by the United States Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. (USLGE).

Bill Scebbi, Director of Development and Marketing for the ApHC, and Wiebe Lise, International Delegate to the ApHC Board of Directors, coordinated planning the event and receiving funding from USLGE. The ApHC joined USLGE in the fall of 2004. The funding USLGE provided will be used to cover expenses for travel, booth space rental, and educational materials to be given out during the expo.

“We are very excited about working with USLGE,” says Scebbi. “They have been great to deal with so far, and they are very focused on promoting U.S. genetics internationally, which is what we’re trying to do with the Appaloosa.”Scebbi and Lise plan to showcase the Appaloosa with live horses, promotional materials, and an educational, interactive computer program.

Equitana occurs every two years. In 2003 approximately 239,000 people attended, visiting booths of 845 exhibitors from 21 countries. The expo also consists of breed demonstrations, informative sessions on training techniques, competitions, and entertainment.
USLGE is a nationwide livestock-specific, not-for-profit, trade association representing the International Market Development interests of the U.S. dairy, beef, sheep, swine and horse breeding industries. Its representation encompasses the embryo and semen industry, livestock export sector, plus leading State Departments of Agriculture from top livestock producing states across the United States.

Nutrena joins the Appaloosa Horse Club to promote excellence in equine nutrition and performance

As a major sponsor, Nutrena has announced a five-year agreement with the Appaloosa Horse Club to promote excellence in equine nutrition and performance. Effective January 4, 2005, the recently announced agreement represents a significant commitment by Nutrena and the ApHC to increase awareness and understanding for the increasingly important role that nutrition plays in equine health and achievement.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to work with an absolute leader in the horse industry—and to share our passion for horses, nutrition and performance,” says Sue Kelly, Nutrena Equine Consultant and special representative to the Appaloosa Horse Club. “With nearly 10,000 new Appaloosa registrations around the world each year, this is truly an international effort that reaches out to equine professionals and enthusiasts everywhere.”
As part of its commitment, Nutrena will sponsor the Nutrena Iron Horse Competition and will present its coveted $10,000 Iron Horse Award to the winner at the Appaloosa World Horse Show in October – November 2005. The Nutrena Iron Horse Competition is open to all qualified Appaloosas, with the winning award and trophy going to the horse that accumulates the most points in competition in either non-pro or open classes. The horse with the most points wins. For competition details, contact the Appaloosa Horse Club at (208) 882-5578 or go to www.appaloosa.com

“This major agreement with Nutrena, and all the support it entails, is a significant and very positive step for the Appaloosa Horse Club,” says ApHC President Frank Larrabee. “With the unique versatility, endurance and athleticism of the Appaloosa horse, the new Iron Horse competition is a perfect fit.”

In addition, Nutrena will also be an active participant and supporter of the National and World shows. Nutrena will serve as a valued resource for ApHC members with the very latest information and innovations affecting equine care and nutrition, www.nutrenaworld.com.
“We’re also pleased to announce that Nutrena has been named the official feed of the Appaloosa Horse Club,” says Larrabee. “After all, we share a proud tradition and a common heritage that dates back to the 1930s when the first Appaloosa was registered — and the first bag of Nutrena horse feed was filled. From the very beginning, we’ve both been devoted to achieving excellence in equine performance.”

Nutrena is the flagship brand of the largest and fastest growing feed company in the world—Cargill Animal Nutrition. Vitality®, Life Design®, Empower®, XTN™ and Legacy® are among the premium horse feeds sold under the Nutrena® brand by more than 2,800 Nutrena dealers nationwide.

Appaloosa Horse Club Schedules Trail Rides for 2005

Moscow, Idaho – Get ready to saddle up for the Appaloosa Horse Club’s 2005 trail rides. This year, the ApHC has scheduled four exciting rides for Appaloosa enthusiasts who love riding their horses on scenic trails: the Apache Land, Land of Liberty, Chief Joseph and Sheltowee.
Ride participants will enjoy trail riding in some of America's most beautiful and historical areas. Each ride will provide participants with many opportunities to relax, socialize and create wonderful memories.
The 2005 trail riding season begins with the Apache Land ride held May 8–14 in the enchanting Zuni Mountains near Gallup, New Mexico. Riders will experience the history of the Zuni, Hopi, Pueblo and settler relics that still remain. The ApHC welcomes all breeds of horses on this wagon-wheel-type trail ride with a base camp.

This year’s Land of Liberty Family Trail Ride, held June 12–18 at the Flying W Ranch, will take participants into the pristine Allegheny National Forest near Kellettville, Pennsylvania. This all-breed, wagon-wheel-type ride features a variety of entertainment, including activities for all ages.
Since 1964 registered Appaloosas have trekked the Chief Joseph Trail Ride, the premier historic ride of the year. The ride retraces the 1,300-mile journey the Nez Perce and their Appaloosas took during their flight from the U.S. Cavalry in 1877. For 13 years, the week-long Chief Joseph Trail Ride covers a section of this path. This year’s ride will cover the second leg of the ride in the picturesque Northwest from Tolo Lake to the Whitebird Battlefield Loop, July 17–23.
The trail riding season concludes October 2–8 with the Sheltowee ride taking place at the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. Guests may ride portions of the 269-mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. Each day’s ride will leave participants breathless as they view deep gorges, whitewater rivers, cool streams, and a variety of wildlife.

Visit the ApHC’s Web site at www.appaloosa.com for ride fees and deadlines.
