New Board proposals Recognize Distance Horses and Riders
   Submitted by Sheryl Levin

The following motions were passed by each committee unanimously at the Board of Directors meeting held in March – April 2005. These proposals will be voted on again in July, so please contact your director and say “yes” to help promote the Appaloosa distance horse.

1. A National Championship Endurance Ride will be approved starting in 2006. The Championship Endurance Ride may be held in conjunction with an existing approved ride. The ApHC will provide a
championship trophy and the horse will be titled a National Champion.

2. An Appaloosa enrolled in the distance program may earn a register of merit by completing 250 miles of approved open endurance, open limited distance and open competitive trail rides, separate or
combined, consisting of 25 miles or longer in distance. The horse must be at least 5 years old to be eligible. At least one owner must be a member of the ApHC and miles cannot be retroactive.

3. Saddle Log rule 451.C. will be amended to read “Awards will be given for successful completion of 100, 200, 500, 1000 and each 1000-hour plateau thereafter, for hours ridden.

4. An annual high-point award in the form of a jacket will be given to an ApHC distance-enrolled member at the American Endurance Ride Conference banquet held yearly, with the first to be awarded in 2006.

5. Rule 450 — should be revised by deleting “Inactive records will be kept a maximum of five years” and replaced with “All distance records will be maintained in the horse’s permanent performance record. All saddle log hours will be maintained in the customer file for each enrolled member starting in 2006.

6. Also approved was the APEX (Appaloosa Excellence) program that awards $10,000 to the winner of eight of the top events in the world. One of the events listed is the Hagen Cup, which is awarded at the Western States Trail Ride — popularly called the Tevis Cup Ride, which is the oldest modern day endurance ride, having been held annually since 1955. This ride has been the inspiration and model for the most challenging endurance rides worldwide. The Hagen Cup is awarded to the rider whose horse is in the “most superior physical condition” of the first 10 horses to cross the finish line. An Appaloosa named of Ruff Spot’s Banner won this event in 1959.

Distance Appaloosas have been gracing the distance trails for more than 45 years. In 1972 the ApHC Board of Directors wanted to recognized these horses and riders and voted that horses could earn medallions starting in January 1973 in distance riding; the same year racing was included in the medallion program. The following year, January 1974, performance and halter were included in the medallion program. ApHC records show that we have 623 bronze medallion winners, 15 silver medallion winners and 12 gold medallion winners in distance riding since 1973. Because of the perseverance of their owners/riders and the outstanding ability of the Appaloosa distance horse, these longtime distance-riding enthusiasts saw a future and persevered. I personally would like to thank the board for acknowledging our dedication to not only the outstanding Appaloosa distance horse but to the sport that we enjoy with our Appaloosa partners. These proposals to the board of directors will only help continue to make the dream of a “Future in the Long Run” possible for all of us.

The Appaloosa Distance Program is picking up speed! Please join us in this exciting, challenging and special sport. These horses and riders deserve this recognition for their ability to cover outstanding distances, compete against other outstanding performers and excel against all other breeds in distance riding. Please contact Trail Ride/Rides Coordinator Jackie Hartman T (208) 882-5578 ext. 221 or trailrides@appaloosa.com if you’d like any information on these programs, or visit these Web sites:

Mare DNA Kits On Sale

The ApHC is now offering mare DNA kits at the special rate of $35. The board of directors implemented mandatory DNA testing for breeding mares beginning January 1, 2004. All mares born in 1995 and after must have their DNA on file before said mare’s produce, born in 2004 or after, will be registered. Mares born before 1995 producing foals in 2004 and beyond must have their DNA on file according to the schedule below:

Foal’s birth year/Mare’s birth year (must have mare’s DNA on file)
2004/1995
2005/1994
2006/1993
2007/1992
2008/1991
2009/1990 and prior years

Stallion and gelding DNA kits are still $50. If you have any questions or would like to order a DNA kit, please contact the registration department at (208) 882-5578 ext. 300.

   ApHC Pedigrees

The ApHC offers four kinds of Appaloosa pedigrees to further promote and preserve the breed. These may include your horse’s parentage, show history, color and coat pattern:
  • Five-generation pedigree includes horses’ names and numbers, $15.
  • Four-generation color pedigree includes horses’ names, numbers, foaling years, Appaloosa base colors and coat patterns, $20.
  • Four-generation show/race pedigree includes horses’ names, numbers, foaling years, Appaloosa show and race histories, $25.
  • Three-generation color show/race pedigree includes horses’ names, numbers, foaling years, Appaloosa base colors, coat patterns and show/race histories, $25.

   Immediate Discontinuation Of Blood Typing!

Due to limited access to blood-type processing as a means of parentage verification, it has become necessary for the ApHC to immediately discontinue sales of blood-typing kits as a means of parentage verification. As of April 4, 2005, should you need to have a foal parentage-verified, it must be done via DNA typing instead of blood typing. The ApHC will no longer allow breeding stallions or mares to file blood types.

All stallions by submission of their stallion breeding report for any breeding year must be DNA tested and the result must be filed with the ApHC.

If you own an Appaloosa whose blood type was filed after 1995, that blood may be converted to DNA. If it’s necessary that you pull a hair sample for DNA typing, the cost of the kit is $35 for mares and $50 for stallions and geldings. It’s imperative that you contact the ApHC at (208)882-5578 ext. 300 with your horses’ names and registration numbers so a customer service representative can verify the necessity for you to complete DNA typing.

   Foundation Pedigree Designation

Enrolling in the Foundation Pedigree Designation is a great way to show pride in your Appaloosa’s heritage and ensure its eligibility in regional show FPD classes. The FPD classification on your horse’s certificate of registration will provide proof of Appaloosa bloodlines and important clues to breeding potential. By taking notice of valuable foundation bloodlines, breeders have been able to select desired qualities such as conformation, soundness, athletic ability and Appaloosa characteristics.

Visit the ApHC Web site at www.appaloosa.com/downloadableforms.shtm for enrollment forms, or apply when registering or transferring horses. If you have questions or would like a free printout of horses that may be eligible, contact the registration department at (208) 882-5578 ext. 300 or registration@appaloosa.com.

Appaloosa Regional Youth Club of the Year Named

The New York State Appaloosa Youth Association was named “2004 Appaloosa Regional Youth Club of the Year.” This youth association is comprised of four regional clubs in New York: the Empire Appaloosa Association, the Western New York Appaloosa Association, the Lake Champlain Appaloosa Club and the Northeastern Appaloosa Association. With the help of their advisor, Elyn Ring, this youth club completed a scrapbook depicting their activities and involvement in the Appaloosa industry throughout the year, earning them first place. In recognition of their achievement, the club will receive a trophy plaque and their scrapbook will be on display year-round in the Appaloosa museum and at the 2005 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show and 58th National Appaloosa Show. The ApHC will also sponsor a team party to celebrate and recognize their contest win.

This club participated in many social events and put on fundraisers for their club’s activities. The youth club was active in attending monthly meetings, attending various ApHC shows and events, participating in trail rides, attending clinics, and hosting a year-end awards banquet. Most notable, the youth club sold apples and candy and held various other fundraisers to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Hospital for the second year in a row. The club raised $3,000 for the hospital. Many of the youth club members traveled to Oklahoma City for the 2003 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show and participated in many activities there. Throughout the year many of the youth entered the Speech, Photography, Essay, Art, Stall Decorating, or Little Buckaroo Dummy Roping contests. The youth club’s scrapbook depicted their yearlong activities with photos, newsletters, horse quotes, membership lists and trivia information.
For more information on this contest, please contact the ApHC Youth Director at (208) 882-5578 ext. 264. Participation is free and the deadline is March 1 for the previous year’s activities. Look for more upcoming information on this program in future issues of Appaloosa Journal.

   Attention shutterbugs!

The ApHC Show Department is always on the lookout for good quality candid photos of youths and non-pros and their Appaloosas in various disciplines and environments. If you have photos that you think the ApHC can use, please send them to the ApHC, attention Mandi Knapp. Submitted photos should be of the highest quality. Prints can be no smaller than 5x7 inches, although 8x10-inch is preferred. Photographer’s signed release and other pertinent information must accompany the image.
