Foundation
Pedigree Designation
The FPD classification on your horse’s certificate of registration
provides proof of Appaloosa bloodlines and important clues
to breeding potential. By taking notice of valuable foundation
bloodlines, breeders have been able to select desired qualities
such as conformation, soundness, athletic ability and Appaloosa
characteristics. |

Announcing
the new Generation Advancement Program for Foundation Breeders
On January 1, 2006, the ApHC is starting a new Generation Advancement
Program (GAP) that recognizes horses of advancing generations
of registered Appaloosa-to-Appaloosa breeding.
The GAP is not an extension of the FPD. Changes made to the FPD in
2002 allow unknown, unregistered and/or non-Appaloosas to count toward
the 100 percent FPD qualification. The GAP does not. To be eligible
for the first level (G5) of the program, a horse must:
- Have parents with four full generations
of ApHC registered Appaloosas in their pedigrees. There
can be no unknown, unregistered or outcross horses in
the four generation pedigree.
- Applicant horse must be parentage verified
via DNA testing through the ApHC and results filed with
the ApHC.
- Dam and sire of the applicant horse must
be registered with the ApHC and must be DNA tested and
the results filed with the ApHC.
- At least one parent must be registered
with a Regular (#) registration classification
|
An initial applicant Appaloosa may
qualify for a first level (G5). Only offspring of horses entered
in the GAP will qualify for the next level of the program. For example,
generation six (G6) is comprised of horses with five complete generations
of ApHC-registered Appaloosa. A G6 level horse results from the
breeding of two G5 level horses or a G5 level horse and a G5 level
or higher horse. Resulting foals only advance one level from the
lowest level parent.
ApHC-registered Appaloosas that are eligible to show at ApHC-approved
and/or sponsored events, and are entered in the GAP may enter ApHC-approved
FPD classes in addition to other ApHC-approved classes for which
they are eligible.
For fees, forms and complete rules and regulations for the GAP,
please visit
www.appaloosa.com or call ext. 300. |
