ApHC
member directs film featuring Appaloosa
Chippen Gold, owned by Tony Nix of Hugoton, Kansas, is one fortunate
Appaloosa that will soon have the privilege of sharing the spotlight
with Emmy-nominated TV and film star Barry Corbin in a short film,
Trail End, due to start production in May 2006.
Trail End is under the direction of ApHC member Shannan Keenan of
Just Hank Productions. In 1982 Shannan became the owner of Appaloosa
gelding Just Hank. Among his achievements, Just Hank placed in the
top 10 at the Appaloosa Cutting Futurity in Sweetwater, Texas, in
1973. Shannan was inspired by his spirit and determination, so decided
to name her company in honor of him.
Shannan would also like to share her love and admiration for Appaloosas
in Trail End, and asked the ApHC to support the film and help her
locate the ideal horse for Corbin, who’s had prominent roles
in movies and TV shows such as Northern Exposure, War Games, Lonesome
Dove and One Tree Hill. Tony Nix was contacted due to his close proximity
to the production’s filming locations, and Shannan agreed that
Chippen Gold, his 14-year-old dun gelding with a blanket, four white
pasterns and blaze face, would be perfect for the role.
Together, Corbin and Chippen Gold will portray the story of a dying
man, Hank Crow, completing a personal mission of riding in every state
with his loyal companion, an old Appaloosa horse. Hank has saved his
home state of Kansas for his last ride and embarks with his Appaloosa
on a journey spanning from the Gypsum Hills to Monument Rocks, finally
ending in Hank’s childhood town of Dighton where the trail ends
at his wife’s grave.
To raise funds for the production, the Kansas Horse Council organized
a trail ride in the Kansas Gypsum Hills from March 31–April
2. The three-day event took place at the Gant-Larson Ranch in the
city of Medicine Lodge and featured a variety of activities including
cowboy poetry, an information session about equine nutrition, and
trail riding with Corbin. RFD-TV will feature the ride on its Best
of America by Horseback program.
For those interested in supporting the film, visit
www.justhank.com/trailend.htm. |

Microchipping
Many have expressed concern with the National Animal Identification
System (NAIS) that will be mandated by the USDA within a few years.
Some ApHC members have indicated that the “tracking of equine
movement” and the “premises identification” components
of this mandate are the primary focus of their concern. The ApHC had
considered the prospect of micro-chipping our horses as an additional
tool toward positive identification, along with DNA parentage verification
and registration photographs. Governmental mandate would require us
to engage in premises identification in addition to microchipping
should we desire to be the official database for our breed.
Most equine breed associations have indicated in
recent weeks that they’d prefer to take a “wait and
see” stance on this issue. There is now an indication that
this identification program may come to horse owners through state
government channels.
The ApHC maintains membership with the American
Horse Council (AHC) and through affiliation with that group is able
to closely monitor the progress of this national initiative. Our
main goal is to protect the interests of Appaloosa owners. President
Frank Larrabee has been a part of the AHC committee that represents
horse owners and breed associations throughout America. He will
be attending the AHC Conference in Washington D.C. in April at which
the National Animal Identification System will be discussed.
Please send your concerns to Frank Larrabee, at
larrabeeapp@aol.com, or to Keri Minden-LeForce at kleforce@appaloosa.com.

Appaloosa
regional youth club of the year named! The
Michigan Appaloosa Youth Club was named Appaloosa regional youth
club of the year for 2005. With the help of advisor Sharon Clark,
this youth club completed a scrapbook depicting members’ activities
and involvement in the Appaloosa industry throughout the year. In
recognition of their achievement, the club will receive a trophy
plaque and their scrapbook displayed year-round in the Appaloosa
Museum and at the 2006 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show and
59th National Appaloosa Show this summer in Oklahoma City. The ApHC
will also sponsor a team party to celebrate and recognize their
contest win.
The Michigan Appaloosa Youth Club had 81 members
in 2005, consisting of youths of all ages and riding disciplines
from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and New York from two different parent
clubs: the Michigan Appaloosa Horse Association and the Western
Michigan Appaloosa Regional Club.
This club participated in many social events for
their club’s activities including monthly meetings, attending
various ApHC shows and events, hosting a pie-eating contest, participating
in a scavenger hunt, holding a tobogganing party and hosting a year-end
awards banquet. This team also attended the World Championship Appaloosa
Youth Show in Oklahoma City where they competed in the team tournament
competition as the Michigan Blizzards.
The club also held a variety of fundraisers such
as a 50/50 raffle, chili sale, pig roast, candle sale, silent auction,
live auction and an open horse show. These fundraisers allowed the
youth club to purchase year-end awards and participate in the many
group activities listed above. They were also very gracious with
a donation to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.
Participation in the contest is free and the deadline
is March 1 for the previous year’s activities. Look for more
information on this program in future issues of Appaloosa Journal.
For more information on this contest, contact the ApHC Youth Director
at ext. 264.
