ApHC Volunteer of the Year

The ApHC Board of Directors approved another innovative recognition program specifically geared to recognizing the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of our regional volunteers.

Volunteers are a mainstay of non-profit organizations. Recruiting and motivating volunteers does not differ significantly from other types of human resource management with the major exception that it’s essential to go that extra step to acknowledge their contribution to your organization.

Volunteers become involved with an organization for reasons other than financial gain and millions will tell you there are wonderful intrinsic rewards in volunteering! The ApHC recognizes the collective efforts of members and staff contributions to the overall mission of the ApHC and that we should encourage opportunities for those efforts to be acknowledged. In order to attract and retain members, we must aim to create an environment where members feel appreciated for their contributions.

Program Overview:

ApHC Chartered Regional Clubs will submit a Volunteer of the Year Nomination Form with biography/resume and photo(s) of the volunteer’s activities to the ApHC Regional Club Coordinator by November 15. Each Regional Club can submit one nomination per year.

The ApHC Regional Club Committee will vote on Volunteer of the Year in each territory from the nominations submitted and results will be issued by February 15 on the ApHC web site, to the Regional Club Committee, the Regional Club Newsletter and Appaloosa Journal, and letters sent to the nominees.

The winner will be recognized in the Regional Club Newsletter, Appaloosa Journal, on the ApHC web site and in the Yearbook. An award will be presented to the winner at the ApHC annual open banquet if the winner attends. A slide show presentation will be done in conjunction with the award.

By recognizing and rewarding regionally active members who invest time and effort in promoting their regional club, the

ApHC and the Appaloosa breed, we are creating interest, excitement and growth from the regional level that will resonate throughout the Appaloosa industry with nearly immediate results.

Nominations due on November 15, 2007 and the first Volunteer of the Year will be awarded at the ApHC open banquet in 2008.

ApHC undertakes innovative plan

As part of a plan that sets it apart from other registries for colored horses, the Appaloosa Horse Club is now issuing performance permits to non-characteristic, or non-colored Appaloosas. These permits verify pedigree, establish a horse’s right to show in all ApHC-approved events and to earn ApHC race awards. They are part of the Performance Permit Program (PPP), approved last year by the ApHC board of directors and enacted by staff on January 1.

All non-characteristic Appaloosas are eligible, whether the result of an Appaloosa-to-Appaloosa breeding or Appaloosa-to-approved-outcross breeding. ApHC approves outcrosses to Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds and Arabians. PPP replaces the Certified Pedigree Option (CPO), which since 2002 had been available only to foals with two registered Appaloosa parents.

Shonda Nelson, ApHC registrar, reports that 231 permits were issued through May 31, 2007. Of the permits issued, 71 percent were to horses with two Appaloosa parents. The remaining 29 percent went to horses with an approved-outcross parent.

Permits have a one-time fee and are good for the horse’s lifetime. Fees range from $150 to $315, depending on the owner’s ApHC membership status and the horse’s parentage. Fees are highest for non-members and horses with an approved-outcross parent. The fee schedule is set to increase on January 1, 2008, as an incentive for owners to acquire permits prior to that date.

Further details about PPP are available at www.appaloosa.com, under the Registration category on the main menu. Or, call the ApHC Registration Department at (208) 882-5578, ext. 300, or e-mail registration@appaloosa.com.

Farm Flag advertising ensures your logo is seen by thousands of exhibitors over the 13-day show. Flags are hung in the State Fair Arena for maximum visibility. Cost is $100 to hang an existing banner, or $250 to create and hang a new banner.

Class sponsors are recognized with announcements, on the top ten results page on the website, and in the National Network. Sponsorships at the Youth World Show are recognized as donations to the AYA. Cost is $100 to sponsor 1 class; each additional class is $50.

Promotional Packages add value by combining promotional opportunities at a discounted rate. We can also arrange custom packages; just give Marketing a call at extension 273 or 282.

Trail register of merit

As of January 2006, distance riders can earn a register of merit for completing 250 miles of approved open endurance, open limited distance and open competitive trail rides—separate or combined—consisting of rides 25 miles or longer, over the lifetime of the horse. Only miles completed from 2006 forward will be used for the calculation of this award.

A year-end jacket will be awarded annually to the year-end high-mileage endurance horse at the American Endurance Ride Conference banquet.
For a one-time fee of $25 per horse, enroll your ApHC-registered Appaloosa in the ApHC Distance Program. This fee allows the owner to participate in ApHC-approved endurance and competitive rides. By enrolling in the ApHC Distance Program and submitting the ride report forms, you can earn medallions, a register of merit, plaques, a high-mileage jacket, year-end awards and recognition in Appaloosa Journal.
