For trail and distance information, visit www.appaloosa.com, e-mail trailrides@appaloosa.com or phone 208-882-5578 ext. 221.

Attention trail riders

Due to changing liability insurance requirements, all participants (riders and non-riders) on ApHC-sponsored trail rides must be current members of the ApHC. Participants on the Apache Land, Land of Liberty and Sheltowee Trail Rides will be affected by this change. If you’ve already signed up for one of these rides and are not a member, please contact the ApHC office at 208-882-5578 ext. 221 or e-mail the trail department at trailrides@appaloosa.com.

Solid-bred performance permits:

As part of a plan to set the Appaloosa Horse Club apart from other color registries, the ApHC is now issuing performance permits to non-characteristic (solid) Appaloosas. These permits verify pedigree, establish a horse’s right to show in all ApHC-approved events and to earn ApHC race awards. They are part of the Performance Permit Program (PPP), approved last year by the ApHC board of directors and enacted on January 1, 2007.

All non-characteristic Appaloosas are eligible, whether the result of an Appaloosa-to-Appaloosa breeding or Appaloosa-to-approved-outcross breeding. ApHC approves outcrosses to Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds and Arabians. PPP replaces the Certified Pedigree Option (CPO), which since 2002 had been available only to foals with two registered Appaloosa parents.
Shonda Nelson, ApHC registrar, reports that 231 permits were issued through May 31, 2007. Of the permits issued, 71 percent were to horses with two Appaloosa parents. The remaining 29 percent went to horses with an approved-outcross parent.

Permits have a one-time fee and are good for the horse’s lifetime. Fees range from $150 to $315, depending on the owner’s ApHC membership status and the horse’s parentage. Fees are highest for non-members and horses with an approved-outcross parent. The fee schedule is set to increase on January 1, 2008, as an incentive for owners to acquire permits prior to that date.

Further details about PPP are available at www.appaloosa.com, under the Registration category on the main menu. Or, call the ApHC Registration Department at (208) 882-5578, ext. 300, or e-mail registration@appaloosa.com.

Watch for flipped photos:

Because of the acceptable and popular use of digital photography, photographs required for registration purposes are often “flipped” or reversed. For example, a white stocking on the left hind leg will show in the photograph as a white stocking on the right hind leg. Please double-check your digital photographs to make certain that your photographs haven’t been “flipped.”

Update that tired certificate

Tired of those old, difficult to see, black-and-white images on the back of your horse’s certificate of registration? Update them with current, full-color photographs for only $20! Send us your horse’s original certificate of registration, updated, full-color photographs clearly showing the direct face, complete left and right sides of horse and the proper fee and the ApHC will update your certificate with photographs that show off your beloved Appaloosa
!

Tell us where to send certificates

Certificates of registration are sent from the ApHC to the current owner of the horse unless a statement signed by the current owner is submitted with instructions to send the certificate to someone other than the owner.

Want to frame your Appaloosa’s pedigree?

The ApHC offers four kinds of Appaloosa pedigrees to further promote and preserve the breed:

• Five-generation pedigree — includes horses’ names and numbers, $15.
