Territory meeting

Regional clubs in Territory I are hosting a meeting on February 16, 2008, at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held at Dakota Magic Casino located on the border of North and South Dakota, off I-29.
The tentative agenda will include: feeding a performance horse—what works and what doesn't; history and heritage of the Appaloosa; trail rides classes and much more!
There will be national directors attending.

The clubs would like to invite all ApHC members to this educational and fun opportunity.
Afternoon sessions will include round table discussions and regional club workshops for those interested. For more information, please contact Gail Smith at smithshowhorses@aol.com.

Correction to 2008 Official Handbook

Rule 236.A., Foundation Pedigree Designation (FPD), on page 71 of the Appaloosa Horse Club 2008 Official Handbook inadvertently deleted criteria for Foundation Pedigree Designation. The Official Handbook on the ApHC web page is correct; however, it will be necessary for you to make the following corrections to your 2008 Handbook:

236.A. To be eligible for the FPD program, the horse must be registered with the ApHC. This option may also be done concurrently with the application for registration. A horse must also meet the following criteria:

1. A minimum of 73% (22) of its ancestors in the preceding four (4) generations must be registered with the ApHC.

2. There must be a minimum of three (3) of these ancestors on both sire and dam sides of the pedigree.

3. Any and all ‘F’ numbered horses within the preceding four (4) generations of the applicant horse’s pedigree are to be considered 100% for FPD purposes, regardless of the parentage of the ‘F’ numbered horses.

4. Every 5 years, beginning in 2009, the minimum percentage of eligibility will increase incrementally by requiring one additional horse in the preceding four (4) generations of the applicant horse to be registered with the ApHC; that is 23 out of 30 beginning in 2009, then 24 out of 30 beginning in 2014, and so on.

Regional Clubs and International Affiliates Annual Reports are due by February 15th

2008 Performance Permit Program Fees

The Performance Permit Program serves to verify pedigrees of non-characteristic Appaloosas, and establishes their right to show in all ApHC-approved and sponsored events and to earn ApHC race awards. The programs first year proved very successful.

As of November 1, 2007, the Appaloosa Horse Club had issued 504 Performance Permits putting us right on track to complete our 600 permit goal for the year. Of the issued permits,
74 percent were Appaloosa x Appaloosa and 26 percent were Appaloosa x Approved Breed (crossbred).

Attention U.S. stallion owners

The ApHC anticipates funding from USDA for a pilot project involving the purchase of frozen semen to be sent to select ApHC International Affiliate organizations. Stallion owners will be reimbursed for a normal breeding fee, plus an amount to cover additional expenses relating to testing, processing, handling and shipping to a central location for expedited overseas transport. We’re requesting four units of semen per breeding fee. Preferred stallions will be identified by the affiliate groups, not the ApHC.

If you have export-ready semen in storage, or if you’d be willing to collect and process semen for export, your stallion could be included on a roster of eligible horses. An important benefit of this project is that stallion owners will be positioned to independently market export-ready semen to overseas customers.

International affiliates participating in the project will become the owners of the semen and breeding certificates, with proceeds used for futurities or classes specifically for ApHC-registered horses. The goal is to encourage expansive use of U.S. genetics within the worldwide Appaloosa population. As we promote international trade, we can also introduce leading sires to additional markets.

If you’re interested in the program or would like additional information, please contact international committee chairman Frank Larrabee at larrabeeapp@aol.com, marketing committee chairman Bill Thiel at bill@appaloosa.net, or Steve Taylor at staylor@appaloosa.com or ext. 208-882-5578 ext. 249.

Gelding/spayed mare fee increase

Beginning January 1, 2008, the registration fees for geldings or spayed mares that do not meet ApHC pedigree requirements or are of unknown pedigree will increase to $100 ($165 non-member). Registration fees for pedigreed geldings will remain at $35 ($100 non-member) regardless of the animal’s age.

Geldings and spayed mares that don’t meet ApHC pedigree requirements or are of unknown pedigree will be accepted for registration with full rights and privileges if they otherwise meet the requirements for Regular (#) registration, coat pattern, mottled skin, and one other characteristic, and are eligible for registration according to ApHC rules. Forms are available at www.appaloosa.com or 208-882-5578 ext. 300.

Performance Permit color incentive payout

Revenue generated from 2007 purchases of performance permits is designated to be paid out at the end of 2008 to top horses in the Appaloosa show, race and distance fields. Only ApHC-registered Appaloosas with Regular registration papers are eligible for payback money.

Total dollars set aside for this program will be divided into 20 equal parts. Nineteen of those equal parts will be paid out in each of the 19 geographical voting zones (as defined in the ApHC handbook) and will be paid to the year-end high-point horses competing in open classes at ApHC-approved regional club shows within each zone. The horse must earn at least one point in a halter class and one point in a performance class in order to be eligible for payout monies.

If there are no qualifying horses, monies will be rolled over and added to the award in that specific zone for the following year. For each horse earning payout money, the award will be split 80 percent to the owner and 20 percent to the breeder.

Payouts to 19 zone high-points are as follows.
If four or more qualify: 55 percent to first, 23 percent to second, 12 percent to third, and 10 percent to fourth
If three qualify: 60 percent to first, 25 percent to second, and 15 percent to third
If two qualify: 68 percent to first, 32 percent to second
If one qualifies: 100 percent to first

The remaining payout money will be split with 50 percent paid back to top-earning racehorses and the remaining 50 percent paid out in the ApHC Distance program.

Of the money set aside for the distance program, half will be paid to the year-end high-mileage endurance horse and half to the year-end high-mileage competitive horse.

The ApHC reserves the right to make changes, employ tie-breaking procedures and adjust placings/funds in cases of disqualification or make changes as may otherwise be necessary. Any changes to the program will be published in Appaloosa Journal.

HYPP Test Result Procedures

HYPP testing is not a requirement of ApHC registration.

As of January 1, 2008, all unregistered Appaloosas that owners choose to have HYPP tested and Parentage Verified through the ApHC, using the same sample for both tests, shall have their HYPP test results designated on their original Certificates of Registration.

All Appaloosas that owners choose to have HYPP tested and Parentage Verified through the ApHC, using the same sample for both tests, that were previously issued a Certificate of Registration will have the option of i) meeting ApHC requirements for a corrected certificate (see Rule 241) upon which the ApHC will designate HYPP test results, or ii) retaining their old certificate and not having the HYPP test results designated.

TEST FEES

HYPP test……..……………………………….…$45 (member & non-member)

Parentage Verification……………………………$50 (member & non-member)

Parentage Verification and HYPP test…………$95 (member & non-member)

Forms are available at www.appaloosa.com/downloadable-forms.htm or contact us
at 208-882-5578 ext. 300.

Please note: The last sentence in Rule 223.A. of the 2008 Official Handbook of the ApHC should be corrected as follows: All fees and procedures for issuance of a duplicate corrected certificate will be required where applicable. It’s not necessary to complete and notarize the affidavit for duplicate certificate so that HYPP test results may be printed on your horse’s certificate of registration. Forms are available at www.appaloosa.com or call 208-882-5578 ext. 300.

The IRIP incentive

Horses registered with Associacao Brasileira de Criadores de Cavalos, Appaloosa Horse Club Brazil (ABCCA), Australian Appaloosa Association Ltd., (AAA) or The Appaloosa Horse Association of New Zealand, (ApHANZ) are now eligible for the new ApHC International Registration Incentive Program (IRIP).

\IRIP is designed to allow horses registered in approved international registries to join the ApHC at an entry level. While IRIP-registered horses are ineligible to compete in ApHC-approved or sponsored shows, they will benefit from the support of the ApHC, and have the opportunity to earn ApHC-sponsored incentive monies at ApHC International Approved Shows and/or Classes. They are also eligible for ACAAP points and awards as well as being eligible to appear on the ApHC International Top Ten and International Leading Breeders’ Reports.

For complete eligibility requirements and proper procedures, see Rule 228 of the Official Handbook of the ApHC, or contact a Registration Department Customer Service Representative at 208-882-5578 ext. 300.
