2007 Regional Club of the Year

And the winner is...Oklahoma Appaloosa Youth Club! Congratulations to the hard working group from Lindsay, Oklahoma for putting together such a fabulous scrapbook of 2007’s activities. They will receive an engraved plaque, $100.00, and the book will be displayed at the Appaloosa Museum throughout the year and at the 2008 World Championship Youth Show in Jackson, Mississippi. Keep an eye out for an article about the club in an upcoming Appaloosa Journal issue!

MEMBER ALERT: Stolen horse update

POSSIBLE SIGHTING - a woman attended an auction at Western Kentucky University in Dec. 2007 (maybe Jan), and there was a dealer outside with several horses tied to a trailer. A black app stuck out in her mind and she remembered the horse had a brand. The truck and trailer has MISSOURI plates.

Have you seen this horse? Do you know this dealer? Ann and her family just want their beloved horse home!

Please contact Debi Metcalfe or Angela Kirby at Stolen Horse International, Inc. (704) 484-2165 and visit their web site www.netposse.com for more information.

If you will be at Equifest Feb 29-Mar 2, please stop by NetPosse's booth (Sec N 4 - booth 2 & 3) and meet Debi Metcalfe and Ninja's owner, Ann.

ApHC conducts facility inspections

In late December, the Appaloosa Horse Club sent contracted representatives to inspect four Appaloosa breeding facilities. This was an effort to assist ApHC breeders with updating their equine records and to alleviate concerns that Appaloosa foaling dates may be being reported incorrectly. The representatives visited randomly chosen farms in four states. We’re please to report that all facility owners were very cooperative and receptive to the inspection, and all breeding and foaling practices were found to be within ApHC rules and regulations.

Equine Affaire

The Appaloosa Horse Club is pleased to announce a continued and expanded “Appaloosa presence” at the Ohio Equine Affaire in Columbus Ohio, April 10—13, 2008, with Appaloosa breed displays, demonstrations and an ApHC Town Hall meeting for Appaloosa discussion and feedback.

The ApHC hosts an Appaloosa information booth and stall in the Cashman Breed Pavilion, where visitors can meet a live Appaloosa horse, view video footage of Appaloosas and their people in action, talk to Appaloosa enthusiasts, and find information on ApHC programs and Appaloosa horses. A regional club booth will be situated next to the ApHC booth to give more interaction with Appaloosa owners, information on local Appaloosa shows and events, Appaloosa horses for sale and Appaloosa stallions for service.

Appaloosa owners from Ohio and the surrounding areas have their horses and farms represented in the Horse & Farm Exhibits barns. Several of these Appaloosa Ambassadors will take part in the Appaloosa breed demonstration Friday April 11 at 1 P.M. to illustrate to the attending public why Appaloosas are the Breed of Choice. Appaloosas will also be featured in the Young Rider Pavilion on Saturday April 12 so youth can get to know the Appaloosa horse.

An ApHC Town Hall Meeting will be held Friday April 11 in the conference area at the Cashman Breed Pavilion, directly after the Appaloosa breed demonstration, with the ApHC President and area Director(s) on hand. These idea and solution generating meetings are being held across the country in response to the desire of members and ApHC Directors for more communication and response on the local level.

For information on the ApHC Town Hall meeting contact Brian Amerine at FARMBA@aol.com or (614) 371-6280, or Laura Lyon at lyoneastwest@usol.com or phone (517) 545-1776.

The Appaloosa Horse Club is proud of all volunteers and recognizes their efforts to provide promotion, education and Appaloosa “one on one” experiences for new, continued and prospective Appaloosa enthusiasts. To learn more about Appaloosa events and opportunities, visit the Appaloosa Horse Club at www.appaloosa.com.

Ticketed entry to the Equine Affaire is required to attend any of the Appaloosa events mentioned. The Ohio Equine Affaire features four days of clinics, seminars, breed displays and demonstrations, entertainment and hosts the largest trade show of any horse exposition in the United States. More information on the Ohio Equine Affaire and ticketing can be found at http://www.equineaffaire.com/ohio/index.html.

Correction to Appaloosa Horse Club 2008 Official Handbook

Rule 236, Foundation Pedigree Designation (FPD), on page 71 of the Appaloosa Horse Club 2008 Official Handbook, inadvertently deleted criteria for Foundation Pedigree Designation. Please make corrections to your 2008 Handbook as follows:

A. To be eligible for the FPD program, he horse must be registered with the ApHC. This option may also be done concurrently with the application for registration. A horse must also meet the following criteria:

1. A minimum of 73 percent (22) of its ancestors in the preceding 4 generations must be registered with the ApHC.
2. There must be a minimum of 3 of these ancestors on both sire and dam sides of the pedigree.
3. Any and all ‘F’ numbered horses within the preceding 4 generations of the applicant horse’s pedigree are to be considered 100 percent for FPD purposes, regardless of the parentage of the ‘F’ numbered horses.
4. Every 5 years, beginning in 2009, the minimum percentage of eligibility will increase incrementally by requiring one additional horse in the preceding 4 generations of the applicant horse to be registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club; that is, 23 out of 30 beginning in 2009, then 24 out of 30 beginning in 2014, and so on.

An animal shelter in your town could win a makeover of up to one million dollars!!

Communities Can Win for Their Shelter by Being Active on Zootoo.com, the New website that Connects Pet Lovers Deadline March 31, 2008

SECAUCUS, NJ (February 2008) – Zootoo.com - a new opinion-sharing website for pet lovers, will celebrate its recent launch by awarding one animal shelter a renovation valued at up to one million dollars. 19 other shelters will receive cash prizes to be used for shelter improvements. For a list and photos of participating shelters in your area, visit http://www.zootoo.com/petservices/.

Pet lovers across America are logging onto Zootoo.com to help animals in their community. Animal Shelters can win the makeover by encouraging their communities to be active on Zootoo.com, the new website where pet lovers help each other and their pets by sharing information on pet services and products and voicing their opinions on pet issues. The more active a pet lover is on Zootoo.com, the more points they earn. Every point can go toward the user’s designated shelter. On March 31, 2008 the 20 shelters with the most points will all win – and one will win a makeover worth up to one million dollars.

How Winners will be Determined
The 20 shelters that accumulate the most points on Zootoo.com between now and March 31, 2008 will be eligible to win the grand prize makeover, or runners-up cash prizes. An Advisory Board will personally conduct site visits of all 20 shelters to evaluate their needs and determine how Zootoo.com can best facilitate enhancements. Additional details and a complete list of rules for the shelter makeover program are available at http://www.zootoo.com/makeover. For further questions and information contact Lee Makofsky Bender Hammerling Group at (973) 744-0707 or Lee.mako@bhgpr.com.

Sooner ApHC youth member and her mare win trailer

During the weekend of February 8, 2008, the Oklahoma Horse Fair, with representatives from both coasts and both borders came to Duncan, OK. Ranch horse and barrel racing events as well as a new trail horse competition entertained the spectators and featured outstanding prizes.

Erica Halterman, a 14 year old who lives in Duncan, OK riding an 8 year old, chestnut Appaloosa mare named Mama’s Design (aka Bridget) negotiated the obstacles better than 20 other competitors and took home a new Titan 2 horse slant trailer with tack room, lettered “The 2008 Champion Trail Horse of Oklahoma”.

The trailer was awarded by Gary Loman, producer of the Oklahoma Horse Fair. Erica competed against Paints, Arabians, and Quarter horses in a field of adults including her Dad, Martin Halterman on the only other Appaloosa, Blazin Hot Sister, a 6 year old chestnut mare.

The course involved leading the horse into the arena, mounting up, loping a figure eight with flying lead change, a gate, a ditch and dirt hill that had to be crossed, putting on/ taking off a rain slicker, an elevated bridge leading to a pen of goats that had to be passed, a walk over logs( real tree trunks), mailbox, and a back through L. “We knew that the goats would probably be there, so about a month ago we got a goat named Mickey, and our horses just love him”, said Valerie Halterman, Erica’s Mom. Thejudges also gave 1-5 additional points for the 5 fastest times, but Erica and Mama’s Design didn’t worry about the clock…Trail is not a speed event.

Friday night during a problem horse clinic, clinician Kerry Kuhn (who was one of the judges) talked about how he judged the mount of each trail horse…he was looking for a quiet horse that stood perfectly still until the rider was ready to go – Erica adjusted a stirrup, tucked in her shirt, rocked the saddle and then told Bridget by picking up the reins – “let’s go”. Out of a total of 200 points, Erica and Bridget scored 186.

They just did what they practice all the time at home and what the judge told them to do…….”show me that you have control of the horse and that you are working together as a team”.

With Bridget, Erica is the current 12-14 Age Division State of Oklahoma 4H Trail Champion, placed 15th in the Sr. Open Trail Class at the 2007 Appaloosa World’s in Ft. Worth, and was awarded the 2006 and 2007 “Horse of the Year” from the Sooner Appaloosa Club. Our family belongs to the Oklahoma Appaloosa Horse Club where both she and Martin are directors, the Sooner Appaloosa Horse Club, and this year we will belong and attend shows on the DalWorth circuit also.
