The Humane Society of the United States announces creation of major new horse sanctuary in Oregon

The Humane Society of the United States announced that it’ll open a new 1,120-acre horse sanctuary and rescue facility in Douglas County, Oregon, the organization’s fourth major animal care facility. The Duchess Sanctuary, the facility’s new name, is made possible thanks to a $3.5 million donation from the Roberts Foundation, the Ark Watch Foundation and its founder Celine Myers. Named in honor of the first horse owned by Celine Myers’ family and after Black Beauty’s mother in Anna Sewell’s famous story, The Duchess Sanctuary will be a sister facility to the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch located in Murchison, Texas, a 1,300-acre ranch operated by The HSUS and The Fund for Animals.

“The Humane Society of the United States is thrilled to add an extraordinary property to its network of animal-care operations,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. “Abused, abandoned and homeless horses will have a safe place at The Duchess Sanctuary and we could not be more grateful to the Roberts Foundation and the Ark Watch Foundation for supporting this tremendously important and much-needed home for horses.”

The Duchess Sanctuary, located south of Eugene, consists of diverse terrain of forest and pasture, and will be managed for horses and for the native wildlife that live on the property.

The first equine residents of the sanctuary will come from The Ark Watch Foundation. Saved from the PMU (pregnant mares’ urine) industry, many of the older mares spent 6 months of the year for 20 years attached to urine collection devices in stalls where they could not even turn around. These mares were kept pregnant so their urine could be used to produce Premarin®, commonly prescribed for estrogen replacement therapy to relieve hormonal deficiency symptoms associated with menopause or hysterectomy.

At the Duchess Sanctuary and the Black Beauty Ranch, The HSUS will care for hundreds of horses, burros and other equines rescued from abuse, homelessness, or other dire circumstances. The group also operates two wildlife centers in Cape Cod, Mass., and San Diego, Calif., where injured and orphaned wildlife receive round-the-clock medical care. Collectively, these facilities make The HSUS and its family of organizations one of the largest provider of animal care in the nation.

The American Shetland Pony Club Salutes Hong Kong

In a gesture of goodwill, the American Shetland Pony Club is sending a gift of two American Shetland Ponies to the Hong Kong Equestrian Federation to salute their efforts in hosting the 2008 Equestrian Olympics. The two Shetland riding ponies are currently in quarantine in Lexington, Kentucky awaiting their flight to Hong Kong scheduled for June 6th. The two show ponies will fly from Chicago to Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Equestrian Federation (HKEF) will host a special presentation ceremony on July 10th in Hong Kong to receive the ponies.

AAEP joins Equestrian Land Conservation Resource Partners’ Program

The Equestrian Land Conservation Resource (ELCR) is pleased to announce that American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) is supporting our mission of saving land for horses by becoming an equestrian partner, joining an exclusive list of national organizations that have become members. AAEP is he 97th partner as ELCR approaches its 100th member milestone.

The AAEP, based in Lexington, Kentucky, strives to improve the health and welfare of the horse, to further the professional development of its members, and to provide resources and leadership for the benefit of the equine industry. Executive Director David Foley said, “As an organization with members in all facets of the equine industry, the AAEP is pleased to be a supporter of the work being accomplished by the ELCR. Proper stewardship of our land is critical for growth in the recreational horse industry.”

Each of ELCR’s Equestrian Partners has made a spiritual and financial commitment to assist with educating and supporting horsemen on issues of land protection for horses. Our Equestrian Partners recognize that, regardless of breed, discipline or product specialty, the U.S. land development rate of 250 acres per hour jeopardizes the future of equestrian recreation, sport and lifestyle. If your organization would like to join our national efforts to save land for horses, visit www.elcr.org, or feel free to call us at 859-455-8383 for more information.

About Equestrian Land Conservation Resource (ELCR):

ELCR, the only national not-for-profit organization assisting in the conservation of land for horses and horse-related activity, serves as a clearinghouse and educational resource for land and horse owners on issues related to good land stewardship, conserving land, and preserving horse access on public and private lands.

About American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP):

AAEP represents an educated group of men and women who cover a broad range of equine disciplines, breeds and associations. As of 2008, over 8,000 veterinarians and veterinary students in 57 countries are members of the AAEP.

Centered Riding Pioneer wins award

Pfizer Animal Health and American Horse Publications (AHP) presented Sally Swift with the seventh annual Equine Industry Vision Award at a ceremonial breakfast held during the AHP Break From the Gate in 2008 seminar in Saratoga Springs, New York. Established in 2002, the Equine Industry Vision Award was the first of its kind to showcase innovation and recognize ingenuity and service across the entire equine market.

At 95, Swift earned this honor for having a revolutionary impact on horseback riding worldwide in the twentieth century. Best known as the founder of the Centered Riding method used by riders across all disciplines, Swift is a true visionary whose legendary work will continue to impact the equine world long beyond her years.

Swift’s groundbreaking book Centered Riding was released in 1985. Since then, the book has been translated into fourteen different languages. In addition, two Centered Riding videos were released in 1986 and are still in the top five of Trafalgar Square Books’ best selling program. A second book Centered Riding 2: Further Exploration was published in 2002 and has been published in nine foreign countries. The two books have sold over three-quarters of a million copies.
