DNA Profile vs. DNA Parentage Verification

DNA is the fundamental building block for a horse’s entire genetic makeup. It’s a component of every cell—hair, blood, semen, saliva, skin, etc. Your Appaloosa’s DNA is different from any other horse’s, with the exception of identical twins.

DNA profiling establishes the unique genetic identity of an Appaloosa. Profiling is valuable to the ApHC because it can be used for future parentage verification studies, or for proving ownership of an Appaloosa that has been recovered.

However, DNA profiling doesn’t automatically verify parentage in an Appaloosa. To verify an Appaloosa’s parentage, the ApHC requires a DNA type on the sire, dam and offspring. Currently, when a DNA profile is submitted to the ApHC, parentage verification is automatically completed if the DNA types of the sire and dam are available.

For further information regarding the differences between DNA profiles and DNA parentage verifications, or to verify if your Appaloosa has DNA on file, or has been parentage verified, please contact 208-882-5578 ext. 300. DNA requirements and DNA kit order forms are available at www.appaloosa.com.

Appaloosas Can Earn Recognition and Awards In Open Equine Activities

It’s the beginning of a new year, and 2009 is the perfect time for owners to get involved in all-breed competition and prove why the Appaloosa is the Breed of Choice. The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) encourages Appaloosa owners to get some color into local all-breed equine events, and the Appaloosa Competitive All-Breed Activities Program (ACAAP) makes it worthwhile for Appaloosa owners to compete!

Open competition a great way to promote the Appaloosa breed, and gives ApHC-registered Appaloosas a chance to hone skills and earn recognition, which increases their value!

Here’s how ACAAP works: Enrolled Appaloosas that participate in all-breed events submit class or show results to the ApHC. Merits are earned based on placement and noted on the Appaloosa’s official performance record.

ACAAP awards merits for nearly all activities including barrel racing, challenged riders events, combined training, cutting, dressage, driving, English equitation, English pleasure, games, halter, judged trail riding, over fences, reining, roping, showmanship, team penning, trail, western equitation, western pleasure, western riding, working cow horse and 4-H.

ACAAP offers the opportunity for Appaloosas to gain the awards and recognition deserved for competing in community events! The complete list of ACAAP awards is available on the official ApHC Web site, and the only way to earn these prestigious awards is to enroll!

Enrolling is easy. Simply call the ApHC Performance Department at 208-882-5578 ext. 400 to request the forms or visit www.appaloosa.com and click “Online Services.” ACAAP enrollment is $25 per horse annually.
