Appaloosa Horse Club, The International Breed Registry for Appaloosa Horses

ApHC E-newsletter, January 2010

Team roping champion on an Appaloosa

We certainly need to brag about Wade Clayton, of Needville, Texas. He and roping partner Jake Kropik won the $86,000 top prize at the U.S. Team Roping Championships “open average” event in Oklahoma City in October. Wade rode an 11-year-old Appaloosa gelding named Below Freezing (nicknamed “Bear”), sired by Dashin Johnny Bar. The horse and rider have been together for several years.
Bear is just one more really outstanding argument against some of the myths about Appaloosa horses and their performance abilities. USTRC certainly ranks as top-level competition, for both horses and people. Having an Appaloosa at the top of the heap is, as some folks like to say, “way cool.” Congratulations!

Update your Appaloosa records

Now is a great time to update your facility records for 2010. When a registered Appaloosa dies, the owner should notify the ApHC via letter, including name, registration number, month, day and year of death and owner signature. You may also submit the original ApHC Certificate of Registration, though it’s not necessary. Additionally, when an Appaloosa has lived 30 years past January 1 of its foaling year, it will be presumed dead and its ApHC records marked accordingly. If the horse has not actually died, the owner may contact the ApHC with satisfactory evidence that the horse is alive, which is then required on an annual basis.

Reports postmarked after November 30 through December 31 are charged a late fee of $20 plus $8 per mare. A fee change is slated for January 1, 2010.
