2008 Appaloosa Trail Rides


For more than 40 years the ApHC has offered trail rides that have taken participants into some of the most historical and beautiful areas of America. The ApHC has four (4) week-long trail rides available: the Apache Land in New Mexico, Land of Liberty in Pennsylvania, Chief Joseph in Idaho and Sheltowee in Kentucky. Whether you’re looking for an adventure or just a relaxing getaway, the ApHC has a trail ride just for you!

APACHE LAND May 4-10, 2008 — NEW MEXICO — 25th Anniversary Ride!

This year’s ride will be held at the Z Lazy B Guest Ranch, 23 miles from Gallup, center of trade for the Navajo and where 90% of the silver and turquoise jewelry made in America is produced. We will ride through tall pine forest and meadow in the Zuni Mountains on the Cibola National Forest. We will visit historic logging and sawmill sites where the early homesteaders carved a living from of the land. Elevation of the ranch is 7500 feet and we will be riding up to 8200 feet. From these vantage points we can see Zuni country to the south and the Red Rock formation to the north. There is ample opportunity to observe the local wildlife which includes deer, elk, turkey and bear. A commemorative saddle will be given away to a lucky rider on this 25th anniversary ride!

The Ride: The Apache Land is a base camp ride, departing from and returning to the camp every day.

Lodging: The Z Lazy B Ranch has a variety of accommodations available. There are 11 RV sites with electrical and water hookups including restrooms and a shower house. For an additional fee there are a limited number of cabins available. For cabin reservations call Jeannie: 505-488-5600.

Meals: All meals included, starting with the evening meal on Sunday, May 4 and ending with breakfast on Saturday, May 10th. Sack lunches will be provided for the noon meal on the trail.

Horses: All breeds are welcome. Bring your own feed. Trailer tie or portable pens.

Entertainment:
Sue Barr will be providing the music each evening. You will enjoy music, dancing, award ceremonies, and relaxing camaraderie.

LAND OF LIBERTY June 15-21, 2008 — PENNSYLVANIA

A ride for the entire family. Children welcome! This area is part of a 1785 land warrant, given to General James Potter who served under George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The location for this year’s ride will Big Elk Lick Campground near Benezette, heart of Elk County and home of the largest wild herd of wapiti east of the Mississippi. We will ride in hardwood forests and wade across Trout Run. The popular Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trial will be a part of our path and we can expect to see elk sometime during the week.

The Ride: A base camp ride, departing from and returning to the camp every day.

Lodging: Big Elk Lick. Cabins available as well as a primitive campground. For information contact Sandy or Bert at (814) 787-4656.

Meals: All meals included, starting with the evening meal on Sunday, June 15th and ending with breakfast on Saturday, June 21st. Sack lunches will be provided for the noon meal on the trail.

CHIEF JOSEPH July 20 -26, 2008 — MONTANA

The Chief Joseph Trail Ride has been considered one of the most historical trail rides in the U.S. today. Since 1964 the ride has retraced as closely as possible the 1,350-mile trek the Nez Perce made during their flight from the U.S. Cavalry in 1877. This year we will be starting at Lolo Hot Springs and traverse the beautiful Bitterroot valley to beyond Stevensville.

The Ride: This is a progressive ride. The camp moves daily.

Lodging: Primitive. There will be no electricity or running water. Tenting is recommended.

Vehicles: There will be a surcharge to bring a vehicle in the daily caravan. See application for details.

Meals: All meals included, beginning with the evening meal on Sunday, July 20th and ending with breakfast on Saturday, July 26th. Sack lunches will be provided for the noon meal on the trail.

Horses: All horses must be ApHC registered Appaloosas. While in camp, horses will need to be tied to the picket lines. A pelleted, weed-free feed will be provided and is included in the ride fee. We may not bring our own feed on this ride.

SHELTOWEE Sept 28 - Oct. 4, 2008 — KENTUCKY

The ride is very near the Wilderness Trail which is the route Daniel Boone and others came through Cumberland Gap (the national park) and into Kentucky. There are numerous other attractions in this area including Cumberland Falls State Park, The Rockcastle River (a designated wild river and one which we will traverse numerous times), the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Corbin and, of course, the magnificent Daniel Boone National Forest.

The Ride: The Sheltowee Trail Ride is a base camp ride, departing from and returning to the camp every day.

Lodging: Primitive. Tenting, RV’s or trailers acceptable.

Meals: All meals included, beginning with the evening meal on Sunday, September 28th and ending with breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 4. Sack lunches will be provided for the noon meal on the trail.

Horses: All breeds are welcome. Bring your own feed.

Ride T-shirts & Apparel: ApHC will provide ride t-shirts as part of your ride fee. Please mark the size you would like on the application form. To receive your ride t-shirt, the signed ride application and all fees must be received by the application deadline. Ride t-shirts will be given to ride participants when they check in. Cancellation Policy: A written notice of cancellation must be received at the ApHC office in order to receive a refund. Refund amounts are graduated based on date the cancellation notice is received. See ride application for details.
